Wednesday 3 Nov

Spalding Folk Club present Granny's Attic - https://www.grannysattic.org.uk - This brilliantly entertaining three-piece are festival favourites, combining traditional and modern material performed with guitar, fiddle and melodeon and powerful vocals. Booking this band has been a long-standing ambition so we're doubly excited to be seeing them now - South Holland Centre, 23 Market Place, Spalding, PE11 1SS - After a long period of uncertainty about the venue (not to mention any of life's other uncertainties) we shall be back at South Holland Centre - The concert is taking place in the upstairs function hall, so there will be plenty of room for social distancing. Hand sanitiser will be available and there should be no need to wear a mask unless you're close to other people. It almost goes without saying that if you're feeling at all unwell you should stay away. There is now a restaurant on the top floor - just walk through it to reach the function hall. The bar will be open all evening - This is a one-off night for the time being while we negotiate the terms of future bookings at SHC. One of the remaining uncertainties is how many people are likely to turn out for events there - so we shall be watching closely to see how many people come through the door! - Starting at 8pm as ever, and still at the pre-Covid price of £6 (for this time at least). See you there we hope - best wishes from all at Spalding Folk Club - more details: www.spaldingfolkclub.co.uk

Saturday 13 Nov

Chris Wood - http://chriswoodmusic.co.uk - Chris Wood is an uncompromising writer whose music reveals his love for the un-official history of the English speaking people. With gentle intelligence he weaves the tradition with his own contemporary parables. A self-taught musician, composer and song writer, Chris is a lifelong autodidact whose independent streak shines through everything he does. Always direct and unafraid to speak his mind, his song writing has been praised for its surgical clarity. He cites his major influence as “Anon”. His most recent album ‘So Much to Defend’ has received wide critical acclaim and includes reflections on minor league football, empty nest syndrome, learning to swim, Cook-in Sauce and, not least, the Gecko as a metaphor for contemporary society. Hollow Point; his chilling ballad of the shooting of Jean Charles Menezez, won a BBC Folk Award (he's won six.) and emphatically secured Wood’s place as a serious speech-master for the unofficial history of England. Collaborators include Martin Carthy, Dizraeli, Billy Bragg, Andy Cutting, Andy Irvine, Karine Polwart, Jean Francois Vrod, The Imagined Village, Hugh Lupton, Martin Butler and many others. On stage Chris has the air of a craftsman who no longer needs to be precious about his art. Without any apparent effort he reaches deep into an enviable repertoire of songs before revealing another gem - Guildhall Arts Centre, St Peter's Hill, Grantham, NG31 6PZ -  7.30pm - tickets £14 (£12) from the Box Office 01476 406158

Jackie Oates & John Spiers - Multi award winning contemporary folk duo Jackie Oates and John Spiers meld together their love of English traditional folk tunes and songs with their voices and acoustic instruments, resulting in a fresh sound that is uplifting, joyful and poignant. Jackie Oates is a mainstay of English traditional music. Regarded as one of the country’s best loved folk performers, Jackie’s current focus is on collaborating with a diverse array of artists and commissions. Jackie’s 2018 album The Joy Of Living reached beyond the past lives in folk song to the lived experience of all of us. The Guardian called it “utterly gorgeous… moving, depth-filled.” Since then, Jackie has released classic covers with Scritti Politti’s Rhodri Marsden, been Artist In Residence at the Twitter-famous Museum of English Rural Life, and begun an ongoing mixed media work about the history of lace telling. Jackie Oates continues to bring elements of the English folk tradition to new people and places; in turn bringing a much needed calm and joy to those who hear it. John Spiers known better in folk circles as Squeezy, has made a name for himself as one of the leading squeezebox players of his generation. Well known for his long-standing duo partnership with Jon Boden in the formidable Spiers & Boden as well as his contribution to the massively popular Bellowhead, John has also played with Eliza Carthy’s Ratcatchers and a number of local folk-dance bands - Guildhall Arts Centre, St Peter's Hill, Grantham, NG31 6PZ -  7.30pm - tickets £14 (£12) from the Box Office 01476 406158
