EPWORTH MUSIC DAY   Another day, another short showcase video of one of the many acts who would normally be performing around the streets on Epworth Music Day and have kindly recorded concert sets that we will be releasing on YouTube on what would be Epworth Music Day on 19th June. Today (20th May), its the multi talented Les Rustiques. Les Rustiques (Janet Porter, Nigel Swan, Jonathan Bynoe) evolved out of the well-established French Traditional Music session at the Garden Gate pub in Leeds, with hosts Nigel and Janet and Jonathan a mainstay. The trio plays mainly French traditional dance tunes such as bourrees and mazurkas with Janet and Jonathan on clarinet or recorder and Nigel on guitar or octave mandolin. They dip into old English and European tunes, cafe music and gentle jazz. Jonathan has wide-ranging musical interests, including morris dance tunes, music hall and orchestral with instruments ranging from crumhorn to bagpipes. In Les Rustiques, Jonathan has rekindled an early interest in clarinet with which he provides harmonic enhancement to the tunes. Nigel, who refers to himself as a ‘Jack of all Trades’ has many years’ experience as a folk and music hall singer and has played keyboard in several barn dance bands including The Polka Dots. He has kept the rhythm tight and set feet tapping. Janet (aka Mrs Porter when singing music hall) played and called dances for The Polka Dots and Mrs Porter’s Ensemble before Covid put a stop to gatherings. She has run themed dances including an American Style social dance in Crowle which featured the Feet First Appalachian Dancers. Janet, Nigel, Jonathan and the regulars, have continued The Garden Gate French Music Session on Zoom during the pandemic and the trio look forward to continuing their musical adventures when circumstances allow
