Narayani in concert, playing Kirtan (Indian) music -  Many traditions throughout the world use the power of song to create a change of emotion, an uplifting of the spirit. Kirtan (pronounced keertan) could be translated as ‘creating positive energy through joyful sound’ and is an ancient and effective yoga practice of singing together, in a ‘call & response’ style that will be familiar to most people. The singing is accompanied by traditional Indian instruments such as the harmonium and tabla. The harmonium is best described as a portable organ, with piano style keys, a bellows mechanism, and ‘stops’ for changing the pitch of the keys. Tabla are Indian drums, played by hand, and can generate a rich variety of sound. Tabla playing is a highly skilled profession, taking many years to learn, and we are lucky enough to have professional tabla player Mandinder Loyal as accompanist. Narayani, a renowned singer who works throughout the UK & Europe, will lead the kirtan and also play harmonium. Narayani has a deeply resonant voice , which she uses to lead the audience in the ‘call & response’. Listen to her on www.onebodyonesound.com - Quaker Meeting House, Peterborough PE3 6AB - 7.30 to 9.30 - tickets £10 from 01832 272783 or 07802 542772 or email

This return to her origins as a respected Scots traditional singer had a profound influence upon her current bittersweet collection of original songs This Earthly Spell. Join Karine this evening and experience her brilliant music, combining ancient traditions with sharp contemporary observations Stamford Arts Centre, St Mary's Street, Stamford, PE9 2DL - 8pm - £15 (£13) - 01780 763293

Their songs cover life as they see it, from the industrial waste lands of the north, to injustice and freedom, matters of the heart and everything in between.
